“MIeRROR” is an installation made of a semitransparent, mirror “aquarium”. This kind of construction allows the object to reflect an image, as well as to project as if it was a screen. Its surface has a webcam which, through a computer and the abstraction of the free library OpenCV designed for the development platform Max Msp Jitter, allowed to create a program to codify information and to render a new image slightly transformed. The system in this prototype captures the position of the eyes, the mouth and the nose, and, according to these dimensions, the image is constantly fragmenting, cutting out, and delivering information to reproduce different sounds related to the human body. The work intends to reflect on concepts derived from from the idea proposed by David Rokeby in the article Transforming Mirrors. According to the Canadian artist, a technology is interactive depending on the degree in which it reflects the consequences of our actions, returning an “image of ourselves” that is no longer the original one, since it is processed and transformed, so that “we can recognize ourselves” by means of such procedure. The installation addresses in a general sense the very issue of interaction, i.e, in a certain way the idea of mirror, reflex and convergence between the reflected image and the projected image works as as metadiscourse of interactive languages. In other words, the work derives from a reflection on the relation between man and machine, on how to generate an aesthetic discourse using interactive languages, and on how to articulate a symbolic and aesthetic construct in this paradigm.
Esteban Agosin (Chile) is a musician and artist devoted to new media. He graduated in music from Valparaíso University, Chile, and is about to earn a master’s degree in Electronic Arts at Tres de Febrero National University, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is also an academic in Valparaíso University, a master’s degree teacher in composition at the Pontifical University of Valparaíso and is part of the team of the Electronic Instruments course at the Pontifical University of Chile. He works in the field of electroacoustic, instrumental and mixed music, and investigates new media applied to sound, digital image, and interactivity. His works are presented in exhibitions, festivals, and concerts in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, Sweden, and the United States. He participated in the organization of the TSONAMI Sound Art Festival in the city of Valparaíso and was the founder of the TSONAMI Bs. As. Sound Art Festival in Buenos Aires. In 2009 he entered the Latin American Sound Art Network (www.redasla.org) and since 2011 is a member of the Electroacoustic Community of Chile (CECH).
