Kanlun Cen – The Undercurrent

In the installation, the distorted image projected on the tabletop is reflected in the cylindrical mirror. While one sequence is distorted and reminiscent of a dreamlike state or the hazy inner workings of the mind, the other is clear and in proportion, which enables us to decipher the anamorphic image, thus to confront the “undercurrent” in our mind.

Kanlun Cen is an animator and graphic designer currently based in Los Angeles. Born in Shanghai, he began studying traditional painting and sketching at the age of seven. He obtained a BA degree in Creative Media from the City University of Hong Kong with a focus in animation art and digital imaging. He draws inspiration from surrealism and anamorphic graphics and works with multiple media including painting, video art and installation. His works were exhibited in SCM Annual 2013, HKFORWARD 2013 and Animamix Biennale 13/14 in Hong Kong. Now, he is pursuing an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts.
