Invading Space Characters

‘Invading Space Characters’ is an internet and game-based web project: A ‘shooter‘ at the bottom of the screen can be moved left and right along the x-axis with the computer mouse. A text block is moving horizontally at the top of the screen: it is a prose poem about losing one’s memory. The text bounces back from the edge of the screen while falling down continuously. Bullets are fired with a mouse click and hit individual characters, making a gap in the text. Reading the text radically conflicts with the game’s aim, which is won the moment the text is completely deleted. The procedure infuses the text with haptic qualities and our usual approach to decoding and understanding written characters is revealed and rejected.
